thinking
Exactly what classical figure/ground compositions does the City of Culture in Santiago de Compostela design-as-commentary dissolve? To me, the design looks more like the rethinking of a typical US suburban mall. Suburban malls are more a field condition than a figure/ground composition, aren't they?

thinking
I knew I wasn't going to be doing anything special to commemorate the 157th Birthday of Otto King of Bavaria on 27 April 2005. At least that's what I thought, until thinking further last night.

twice
The double cathedral at Trier, for me, stands out because of its original enormity in size (more than twice the size of the double churches that still stand in Trier today), and because it was imperially sanctioned, in that prior to the cathedral construction the site was an (or was it the?) Imperial palace.

thinking
In English, the first chapter of The Sphere and the Labyrinth is "The Wicked Architect," and this chapter too was published earlier and separately, (or maybe I'm thinking of the first chapter of Architecture and Utopia).

thinking
And now I'm thinking of the enormous light hoods that "light" the communal spaces of Kahn's Erdman Hall dormitory at Bryn Mawr. Again there is this extremeness in terms of how light enters the space, and the resultant effect is very much part of what makes Kahn's architecture "great."

thinking
And now thinking further about "windows," my favorite panes of glass remain those at either end of the quondam Liberty Bell Pavilion (1976). While not a makeover, per se, the detailing of this building has an extremeness to it overall, even to the point where the roof/ceiling is split right down the middle so as to not disrupt the axis of Independence Hall.

thinking
Anyway, I never expected to be thinking about Kahn and Mitchell/Giurgola architecture in conjunction with "hot rodding," so again, "Who knew?"

thinking
I wonder how differently humanity would be thinking about architecture these days if the Great Pyramid was still like brand new. Blinded by the light, maybe?

thinking
I'm thinking of reading Vanishing Point because I have never been trained to assess plot and narrative and character. Stream of consciousness and free association were the only things to peak my interest when in school. Reading Mann's Joseph and His Brothers (now over 20 years ago) taught me a whole lot about plot and narrative and character, and maybe also taught me to not expect to find much done better.

thinking
Just now I'm thinking of what might be an interesting virtual memorial--utilizing a 3D model of the greater NY/NJ area, a "visitor" would be positioned where the quondam WTC observation deck used to be, and from there he or she could direct their gaze taking in the views that once were.

thinking
Wasn't that book really about a lot of people getting high on pot and then thinking grand thoughts?

thinking
I was thinking, "Strike a pose praying in the garden of Japanese I really think so."

thinking
I heard the Vatican is thinking about buying all the Dubai island reenactments and then build churches on them. It's the only way that they can think of to make the Middle East more Catholic again.

twice
I was on Iceland twice before Bjork.

thinking
"Why am I suddenly thinking of cucumber slices, cavier and Sociables crackers?"

thinking
Try thinking of St. Stephen whenever things seem impossible. The tsunami did happen "on the feast of Stephen" after all.
"One of the first deacons and the first Christian martyr; feast on 26 December. In the Acts of the Apostles the name of St. Stephen occurs for the first time on the occasion of the appointment of the first deacons (Acts, vi, 5). Dissatisfaction concerning the distribution of alms from the community's fund having arisen in the Church, seven men were selected and specially ordained by the Apostles to take care of the temporal relief of the poorer members. Of these seven, Stephen, is the first mentioned and the best known."

twice
My brother frightened me twice a couple of weeks ago when his prone-to-violence schizophrenic other surfaced after an absence of three years.

thinking
My apologies then for thinking what I was thinking as well.

thinking
There are around 500 architectural prints in my basement now that I keep on thinking I'll offer some day at eBay.

thinking
Earlier this year on the day most architects were thinking about the death of Philip Johnson, I and many of my [architect] friends were mourning the death of Leslie Deis. I wasn't able to attend Leslie's memorial service in Dallas, but I sent a message with my friends that did go:
It is thanks to Leslie that my fledgling CAD business, Arcadia - Architectural CAD Services, got off the ground. As a result, Arcadia came to share office space with Dekoda Architects, and it was...
