Pianta dell antico Foro Romano     Le Antichità Romane   Tom. I   tab. XLIII     University of Tokyo

Ichnographia Campus Martius     1st state

Ichnographia Campus Martius     2nd state

The intention here was to present the two states of the Ichnographia in chronological context, between the prior plan of the Roman Forum/Circus Maximus and the later plan of the Circus of Maxentius, thus demonstrating the evolution of Piranesi's rendition of circus plans from fanciful reconstruction to technically acurate deliniation. Alas, the plan of the Circus Maximus (from the University of Tokyo's Piranesi collection) is already drawn techically acurate, but that does not correspond with a hazy memory of the Circus Maximus plan rendered as fanciful reconstruction. Could it be that the Pianta dell antico Foro Romano within Le Antichità Romane Tom. I has also been changed and exists in two differing states? And could a simple image web search provide an answer?

Mausoleum of Romulus   Circus of Maxentius     most likely drawin by Francesco Piranesi
