hedjuk?

John Hejduk is definitely among my favorite architects. I met him once in Philadelphia, and got to take care of his slides before a lecture he gave in 1979--the sneak preview of his latest work then was indeed thrilling. I see Hejduk's work (of the late 1960s/early 1970s) as a distinct creative extension of Le Corbusier's late work, specifically the Carpenter Center at Harvard, the Palais des Congres at Strasbourg (unexecuted), and the Governor's Palace at Chandigarh (unexecuted). (Not until last night did) I see The Berlin Masque as a design related to Piranesi's Ichnographia Campi Martii, and, perhaps it is Hejduk's architecture of Adjusting Foundations that fulfills Venturi's prediction (from the early 1980s within an issue of Casa Vogue, I think) that there will be patterns all over architecture in the near future.

And there's also Hejduk within the Maison Dom-ino Legacy (first published at Quondam 1997.08.18).

And then there's the day Hejduk died:

I'm glad to hear that Lebbeus Woods is doing well given the circumstances. Obviously his well-being means much to many people. John, next time you see Lebbeus tell him I wish him well as well.
The truth is that Lebbeus Woods is certainly not alone right now. There are no doubt thousands of people all over the world that just had major heart surgery, and hundreds of thousands that just experienced death, just in the last minute even.
I'll now forever remember July 3rd 2000. The cold water hose running to my washing machine burst, and when I finally came to the basement there was a half inch of water almost everywhere. The next four hours were spent laying a dozen bath towels all over the floor to soak up the water. My hands were raw for several days afterwards from wringing out all those towels many times repeatedly. About a month later I learned that John Hejduk died on July 3rd 2000. I love the entirely chance associations that memory so often makes.

ps
I know someone that still occasionally insists he is a morphine user, and it's over twenty years since one of the lobes of his brain was removed.

So what's Hejduk doing these days?
going medieval, etc.

Since it's presently for sale, Helena and Eutropia are, as of today (and for a month or two), staying at that great little church in Cape May, NJ.

They went down with Leni, who's staying a while in the empty factory complex on Lake Lenape in May's Landing, NJ.
Le Corbusier extending his stay (exactly) at Cape May Point.

While Hejduk and Izenour are doo-wop-ing it up at the Caribbean in Wildwood.

It looks like Helena might get some nice help in writing her paper--"Pilgrimage, Reenactment and Tourism"--for the Horace Trumbauer Architecture Fan Club Convention.
