Ludwig's and Otto's mother Maria was in fact a Hohenzollern, i.e., a member of the Prussian royal family. She was born a Protestant, but sometime while Queen of Bavaria she converted to Roman Catholicism. Queen Maria and Emperor Wilhelm I were first cousins, thus Ludwig II of Bavaria and Emperor Wilhelm I were first cousins one generation removed.

Several cases of inbreeding occurred within Maria's more immediate ancestors, and this fact is often related when explaining the possible reason for Otto's 'schizophrenia'. Plus, there was mental illness within Otto's immediate Wittelsbach ancestors.
