April 27 at 10 o'clock in the morning our second son was born in Munich (Residenz) in the Hofgartenzimmer. April 29 he was baptized by Archbishop Reinash . . . The birth of Otto was Max's first joy since he became King on the 21st of March. Until then he has had only difficulties . . . His names: Otto Wilhelm Luipold Adalbert Waldemar.
Otto spent his childhood at Hohenschwangau and Berchtesgarten; he was educated with Ludwig and they did everything together except the lessons which they could not share because of the difference in their ages. Otto learned willingly and was diligent. He had the same governors and governesses as Ludwig.
