Studying what is now called "vernacular" architecture is "considered not quite serious in most architecture schools," Izenour says, "but it's tolerated if you don't stick your neck out too far. A few years ago, I had to go to bat for a student who did a master's dissertation on miniature golf courses, but the treatment he got was nothing like the antagonism and resistance I had when I started doing it."
