In Lutyens' project for Liverpool Cathedral the scattered minute windows seen as black dots impose themselves in an independent pattern on the symmetrical, monumental forms of the whole building. The pliable pattern of little windows accommodates service areas required for upkeep of the building and creates human scale that contrasts with the rigid monumentality.
