Les ensembles ne manquent pas d'équilibre: ils manquent d'unité
The sets do not lack balance: they lack unity

Piranesi's designs of chimneys in the Egyptian style seem to conform to the conservative text. They are strictly axially composed and the central portions are stressed.284 Nevertheless, the chimneys have a strange unconventional look which cannot be accounted for merely by the use of the Egyptian features. In the particularly characteristic plates 5 , 10 , and 14 the central main axes are strongly marked, but the single features are unrelated: Les ensembles ne manquent pas d'équilibre: ils manquent d'unité.285 The independence of the elements becomes still more apparent in plates 21 and 28.
