Arcus Gordiani

1

Just inside the gate in the west wall, the porta Praetoria, stood a triumphal arch dedicated to Gordianus III and his wife Tranquillina. It was triple, the side arches being smaller than that in the center, and very richly decorated. Above the side arches were sculptured medallions. In the fifteenth century much of the marble decoration of this arch, which was then in ruins, was used in the building of the Cancelleria, and some architectural fragments have been excavated in recent years. They exhibit unusual artistic excellence for so late a period. (Platner)
