Wright's Morris Store is another one of the exceptions he was confident enough to make. Its strong contradictions between the inside and the
outside--between the particular, private and the general, public functions, make it a traditional urban building rare in Modern architecture.
|
Contradiction, or at least a contrast, between the inside and the outside is an essential characteristic of urban architecture, but it is not only an urban phenomenon. Besides the Villa Savoye and obvious examples like the domestic Greek temples of the Greek Revival which were crammed expediently with series of cells, the Renaissance villa such as Hawksrnoor's Easton Neston or Westover in Virginia juxtaposed symmetrical facades on asymmetrical plans.
