In contrast, the linings of columns and piers in SS. Sergius and Bacchus, St. Stephen Walbrook, Vierzehnheiligen, and Neresheim define residual spaces which open on the dominant spaces, although they are separate from them in varying degrees.

In the Stupinigi Palace because the dominant space is so open, the distinction between dominant and residual spaces in the main hall is ambiguous. In fact, the inner lining is so open that there remains only a vestige of a central inner space, indicated by four piers and the very complex vaulting patterns of the ceiling.
