to see in Philly

The S. S. United States (once the fastest and largest ocean liner in the world) is docked on the Delaware River, way south on Delaware Avenue (somewhat north of the Walt Whitmen Bridge though).
The Liberty Bell Pavilion (Mitchell/Giurgola Architects 1976) before it is demolished (or maybe moved) later this year. While there, you can see the new Constitution Center (Pei/Cobb 2002) too (--then you're a couple blocks from Chinatown).
In conjunction with the Mutter Museum, the Wagner Institute of Science (in North Philadelphia) offers another vast/obscure Victorian collection of biological/geological artifacts--not as weird as Mutter, however.
Take a car ride on Broad Street from end to end to experience the longest "cardo" (axis of the world) in the world--also the longest straight urban street in the world.
If you go all the way up North Broad Street, then see Wright's Beth Sholom Synagogue and then Lynnwood Hall, the now derelict Widener Estate.
You will probably be surprised that there are now sidewalk cafes everywhere, everywhere, everywhere in Center City.
Check out the new stadium/stadium construction in South Philadelphia (south end of Broad Street), and take a last look at Veteran's Stadium before that is torn down (--all the dual sports designed stadiums in the US of the 1970s are now disappearing).
Eastern State Peniteniary offers regular tours daily--location of many scenes in 12 MONKEYS, etc. (If you don't do anything else on this list, at least do this.)
