Only the female ginkgo produces the stuff that stinks. A whole row of ginkgos on Clarkson St. above B St. were cut down (by the Philadelpia Recreation Department, I assume) a couple years ago. Still makes me sad.
I'm guessing the ones on Van Pelt St. between Pine and Lombard are still there. There's no question there are females among them. I used to park my car a lot on Van Pelt in the mid-1980s, and one of the 'egg shells" got carried by my sneaker into my car. "What sphinx in here?!?" indeed.
I didn't know about the unique(?) fanning structure, and I like the choice analogy. Cool.
