to see in Philly

The Japanese House in Fairmount Park. This "philosopher's house," in the 17th century(?) style, was built in Japan in the early 1950s, exhibited in MoMA's Sculpture Garden, NYC (1954), and subsequently moved to Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. Well worth the trip. Make sure you have socks, as no shoes or bare feet are allowed--otherwise you'll have to wear funny paper shoes.

The Japanese House is not far from Memorial Hall, the last remaining building of the Centennial Exposition (1876); go inside to see the great hall under the dome.

Then see the Civil War Memorial, and then see Cedar Grove (1730s), another house that moved (from Frankford, Philadelphia) to Fairmount Park. This 'summer house' still has its indiginous furniture, eg, a full Shereton living room, and a complete Chippendale dining room.
