Andrea Mantegna
painter; b. 1431; d. September 13, 1506.
About 1474, the great painter Mantegna decorated the so-called Camera degli Sposi in the castle at Mantua, with frescoes illustrating the history of the Gonzaga family. For the Marquis Lodovico Gonzaga he designed also the "Triumph of Julius Cæsar," which was intended for a scene in a theatrical representation. It is now known only by cartoons, very much restored, and engravings.
