Closer look: Zaha Hadid's new “floating” Port House in Antwerp
I don't think it's a rape at all. It's more like the older building has a real bad sado-masochistic streak and has been begging for this type of treatment for decades. And now, it can't believe it's ecstasy for who knows how many decades to come.
Then again, who's to say the two of them aren't now imagining a threesome?

Learning from 'Learning from Las Vegas' with Denise Scott Brown, Part I: The Foundation
Tom Wolfe's The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby and Denise Scott Brown's first visit to Las Vegas both occurred in 1965. Since Scott Brown's visit happened very early 1965, it may not be that The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby inspired Scott Brown to visit Las Vegas. The text of The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby, however, certainly seems to have influenced what Scott Brown subsequently thought about Las Vegas, as did the text of Blake's God's Own Junkyard. Peter Blake's God's Own Junkyard was published in 1964, so it may well be that God's Own Junkyard is what inspired Scott Brown to visit Las Vegas. By the way, several images in Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture come from God's Own Junkyard.
See 4142e and 4142d--read all of it because you'll definitely learn something.

Oh, and Scott Brown's answer above, talk about deterritorialization plus ultra!

Quondam's Architecture School to Design Architecture Schools
Your first assignment is to design an architecture school that costs the most, and, by the time you don't graduate, you'll have designed an architecture school that doesn't cost a thing.

Architecture Without Reference
The only way to affirm that architects can design without reference is with a design-without-reference.
Is this a design without reference?
Is this a design without reference?
Is this a design without reference?
Is this a design without reference?
Is this a design without reference?
Is this a design without reference?
Is this a design without reference?

Is this a design without reference?
I suspect the real question being asked here is: Can an architect design an architecture for which there is no precedent?

Architecture Without Reference
There are lots of architectures for which there is no precedent being designed these days. Many of the more recent designs of OMA and BIG have no precedent. There is no precedent for OMA's CCTV or Ascot Residence, nor for BIG's Museum of the Human Body or Art Cluster Arhnem. Moreover, OMA's Patent Office is all about designs for which there is no precedent, and that then even set precedents. And, judging by some of my own designs, even a design that references other designs can still manifest something unprecedented.
