The double-functioning element can be a detail. Mannerist and Baroque buildings abound in drip mouldings which become sills, windows which become niches, cornice ornaments which accommodate windows, quoin strips which are also pilasters, and architraves which make arches.

The pilasters of Michelangelo's niches in the entrance of the Laurentian Library also look like brackets.

Borromini's mouldings in the rear facades of the Propaganda Fide are both window frames and pediments.
