[The day was] a great disappointment [for Piranesi (and some of those around him?)], which sank to upset, and ultimately the illusion became disillusion. A low spirited conclusion after a day also in pain. In bed, however, some hope was regained, although the years-long dream of having my new vision likewise become the world's new vision sadly came to an end.

Morning cloudy, wind SW, temperature 54°. There was an appearance for rain, but about 8 I saw a clear bull's eye near the NW horizon, which I expected was occasioned by a rising wind and it proved so. Our Meeting was silent. Dr. Logan with whom I dined yesterday at J Smiths and had invited to dine with us today was at Meeting and came home with us. We found here S & SL and S. Davis; Judge Washington and J. Hallowell did not arrive till near 3. We had a very pleasant, sociable and quiet conversation. Our political opinions being uniform did not long occupy us. He had read Clark's On Portraiture and told us he was ......[?] of a Quaker, and but for a few things in which he was not satisfied he should be a member of our church. He did not go on to explain his objections, but from his turn of conversation, I suspected the Sacraments and the Trinity were among them. I heard that he went from the Supreme Court in Washington to Alexandria during last term to take the Sacrament[?] of the Supper. He told us today that J Randolph and Key the younger a very ........[?] lawyer had become very grave and circumspect. He believed the latter would leave the bar and study Divinity with a view to Orders. I explained to the judge our ideas of the unity of the Deity. He was forcibly struck by it, said it was entirely new to him and he must have an evening with me upon the subject before he left town. He did not adopt the opinions, but wished to lesson[?] more of it before he dared to give up the Trinity. He said he was a strict Trinitarian but seemed desirous to examine the subject.
