22 December 1812 Tuesday
Morning clear, wind NW, thermometer 32 degrees. About 9 clouds began to rise in the WNW. About 10 I walked to the Fox Chase and on my way a violent wind arose from under the clouds, which brought[?] such clouds of dust and rendered it extremely unpleasant. The wind continued till evening. SL and my son Jabez arrived here about sunset. He brought me the papers to this morning. They contain news from St. Petersburg ....... 10 Mo [blank] of various discordant but dreadful state of misery[?], leaving it uncertain which army has done most mischief to the other, but delirant reges, plectuntur populi. Thermometer rose today to 44 degrees and at 10 PM is at 34 degrees.
