Vases, Candelabra, Grave Stones, Sarcophagi. Tripods, Lamps and Ancient Ornaments volume II
To Mr. Counselor Gio. Frederico Reiffenstein Lover of the fine arts
In act of friendship Cavalier Gio. Batt(ist)a Piranesi.
Marble Ancient Cenerary Urn, which contained the Burnt Ashes of Lucio Aurelio Terento, and of Cecilia Ticherna his Wife. The Owl demonstrates with its wings that it holds the Inscription with the Names of the Deceased Spouses, denoting by means of this Symbol, that these Persons were vigilant in the actions of human life, and prudent, also indicating it to us by the subordinate Sphinxes. The Skulls, the Paterae, and the Simpulo, which are carved on the Sides of this Urn, are Emblems alluding to their Religion. It is full of very fine and elegant Sculptures, and of Ornaments well intertwined in its place, which compose an architected and well-ordered Idea in its Whole. This was found in the year 1766. in the Garden of the Convent of the RR. PP. Celestini in S. Eusebio. Now it is kept in the Author's Museum.

The circular form adopted and followed for this type of monument makes knowledge of it invaluable. The division into several floors was supported by superb columns, adorned with statues, busts, bas-reliefs, bronzes, etc. There are in the basilica of Saint Paul, outside the walls, twenty-four magnificent marble columns, said Pavonazetto, and in one piece, taken by Constantine from the mausoleum of Adrian. Some authors claim that these same columns once adorned the temple of Minerva in Athens.
